Planting trees.
The two main jobs today were planting the late crop potatoes and two fruit trees. The potatoes were Carlingford late crop and were easy to plant. No chitting just straight in the ground. The trees were much more difficult. We tried to find a spot in the productive part of the smallholding where they would not get in the way of future plans. We walked up and down and tried several spots but each time we realised that in a few years it would be obstructing the view from the house or the summerhouse or a particularly good place to put a bench. We couldn't decide on a spot so they have ended up being heeled in at the end of the potatoes - well the spade was still there from doing the potatoes. So a possible spot was the second pig field - so called because it was the overflow enclosure for the pigs.

Doesn't chitting on the ground help the potatoes to grow?
